Should the BBC abandon its plan to shut down BBC 6 Music?

The BBC has announced plans to shut down BBC 6 Music (and the Asian Network) in a series of cost-cutting measures. Many MPG members strongly disagree with this plan.

It's a no-brainer - in stark contrast to Radio 1, which is trivial by comparison (at least during the day) and Radio 2, which is rather stuffy, BBC 6 Music provides intelligent programming and a wide range of opportunities for new music.

The BBC must recognise that 6 Music is a valuable part of its commitment to public service broadcasting.

There are so many effective ways that the BBC could save money this is not one of them! Isn't it about time that the BBC stopped trying to compete commercially and just provide good programmes? Surely that is what publicly funded broadcasting is all about?

Lots of people all over the world listen to BBC R6 and in the Uk of course. Cut out the middle managers first, then start reducing core services if you need to.

yes, the BBCdo need to abandon these short sighted plans. John Peel's legacy was one which first of all broke the mould then showed that genuine interest, knowledge, promotion and an ongoing relationship with listeners made for both consistency and longevity. This ethos has continued with 6 music and there are certainly other areas in the Beeb which could do with paring back. Celebrity travelogues on BBC2 would be one example.

BBC6 music is simply the best breaking music brand out there....BBC and Mr. Thomas should review this insane decision immediately.
BBC should migrate BBC 1 xtra into BBC6 music for a start..why should 1 xtra be sidelined as an urban break through channel/route?...it should be with all other breaking genres at BBC6 music.

Unfortunately due to the sterilisation program that appears to be in place for the BBC over last ten years, turning the BBC into a non-confrontational brand/news channel without any opinions anymore ... someone like SKY, XFM or MTV is just simply going to hi jack the audience and DJ's and belittle the BBC ever further into a irrelevant hole. Sky.XFM,NME and MTV can all follow up breaking bands with breaking videos as well.
How does the BBC not understand that the BBC6 music audience will simply not just migrate to what might be left on BBC airwaves?? The present audience will simply be lost for good.

Absolutely, the UK needs stations like these and they are key to the future development of the music they play. Its illogical to shut down stations that are in their infancy, DAB and the audiences that access it are still growing. This would be yet another nail in the coffin for British and Asian music.

Of course it should stay. What the BBC should be doing is promoting better and giving it time to build the audience it will surely attract, especially once everyone is listening on DAB.

6 music should without doubt stay - some reasons why - it is unique in supplying high quality progamming by committed DJs playing music which covers the full range from the sixties to right now - there is NOTHING else remotely like it - it provides unprecedented exposure opportunities for new musicians - in reaching an international audience, it acts as a great ambassador for UK music ecouraging overseas sales - the cross section of content is educational in introducing young listeners to older music and oldies to new music - it fulfills the public service broadcast remit as a music station on every level and does what it does extremely well AND it is not expensive to run - give it more publicity and it will thrive.
