FX Studio Space

FX Rentals has announced a new type of recording facility, FX YourSpace: a bespoke recording space available to rent by the hour, with the benefit of company's large selection of audio equipment and instruments for hire onsite.

Neither a recording studio nor a long-let programming room, the spaces are aimed at musicians, engineers and producers who own portable equipment. Each of the two FX YourSpace facilities offers a spacious control room with 5.1 monitoring and dedicated sound booths for overdubs, voice-overs, etc, allowing clients to adapt the space to their own requirements. FX YourSpace users are encouraged to bring in their personal equipment, which can be easily supplemented with some choice pieces from FX's vast selection of musical instruments and audio equipment on the premises.

"We wanted to create a high-spec space, but we didn't want the design to dictate the use," explains FX Rentals' chairman Roger Evan. "We've already had clients with a variety of projects for which the rooms have been ideal: mixing, tracking, rehearsals and composition. The added bonus of a huge range of equipment available to rent into the rooms has been very successful."

FX YourSpace operates from 10.00am to 10.00pm, seven days a week, with three-hour session slots priced at £15/hour and a 12-hour day at £135. Rental equipment is instantly available with a 75% discount.

FX currently operates two FX YourSpace rooms, both with sound booths, air conditioning, internet access and 5.1 monitoring. There is a central lounge area providing tea/coffee and TV.

The MPG Full Membership status enables eligible members to vote in the short-listing process of the MPG Awards.

To qualify for Full Member status, you must have either:

6 credits for production, engineering, mixing or mastering on commercially released tracks, either on single or multiple CDs, vinyl or cassette albums, EPs and singles, or DVDs. These tracks must have been commercially available via traditional outlets, i.e. record shops or mail order. Personal sales, i.e. directly by the artist at live venues, do not qualify.

or:

12 credits for production, engineering, mixing or mastering on commercially released tracks or two full-length CD releases that are available via digital download from recognised online music retail sites. Sales from personal websites do not qualify. Tracks solely available free from other websites, e.g. a MySpace page, do not qualify.

I went down to Electrical Audio to record Big Bobs new record. The atmosphere was great. Euipment was ok, but I hired what I needed from FX etc. When I was down there though, we had a weird hum on the bass amp, which was rather annoying. The techs came down and found a fault with the wiring of the mains blablabla. Value for money was great, would recommend it again.

I know Electrical Audio have a great reputation, but I can‘t recommend it at all.

The people are friendly but they dont know what they are doing and nothing is working and everything is humming blablabla

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF USE

The member profile area of HYPERLINK "http://www.mpg.org.uk" www.mpg.org.uk is a web service for members of Music Producers Guild provided by Music Producers Guild Limited (registered as a company limited by guarantee in England company number 3746150). The MPG site is referred to in these terms and conditions as "the Site".

The following general terms and conditions apply to members ("Members") who wish to upload material to the member profile area.

GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1.   ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS

BY UPLOADING ANY MATERIAL TO THE SITE YOU ARE ACCEPTING THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS AND THE PRIVACY POLICY AND AGREEING TO THEM. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH ANY TERM, YOU SHOULD NOT UPLOAD ANY MATERIAL. The Privacy Policy can be found here: Privacy Policy

2.   USE OF THE SITE

MPG grants you the right to create a member profile and upload material for that profile in accordance with these terms and conditions.

The Site is for the personal use of the Members and visitors for the purpose of promoting Members' services and is not for use in relation to any commercial enterprise not approved by MPG. For example the gathering of names and e-mail addresses for use in sending unsolicited e mail or otherwise, or the commercial advertising of any product constitutes unauthorised use.

When you register you will create an "account" by supplying information. You warrant that this information is true, accurate and complete. You may not use another Member's account and you are solely responsible for the use of your account. You should keep your password secure and notify MPG of any breach of security.

3.   ELEGIBILTY

You confirm that you are fully able to agree to and fulfil all your obligations under these terms and conditions, and that all representations you make to us are true and accurate.

4.   MATERIAL

MPG invites submission to the Site of audio recordings, photographs, imagery and words ("Material") in accordance with these terms and conditions.

You hereby grant to MPG the non-exclusive worldwide transferable licence to reproduce, distribute, display and perform the Material on the Site for viewing and streaming purposes only and not for downloads. Members retain all of their ownership rights in the Material which is owned by them.

YOU AGREE NOT TO POST ON THE SITE MATERIAL:

5.   REMOVAL FROM SITE

MPG reserves the right in its absolute discretion to remove Material from the Site without notice. If any Member repeatedly posts infringing material on the Site or behaves in an unauthorised manner MPG has the right to terminate that User's access to the Site.

If any person or company owns the copyright in any Material which has been posted on the Site in violation of the conditions set out above and in breach of that copyright, such person or company should submit to the nominated MPG representative details of the alleged infringement together with proof of ownership and contact details. Provided that MPG is satisfied with the validity of such claim it will remove the violating item(s) from the Site. 6.   MPG PROPERTY

The MPG name, logo, Site design, editorial content and any other intellectual property introduced to the Site by MPG (rather than by Members) belongs to MPG and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights. 8.   MEMBER'S SOLE RISK

Membership Refund and Cancellation Policy

12. MEMBERSHIP REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

The MPG offers a cooling off period of 14 days, following any application for membership. The MPG will endeavour to process any claim for refund or cancellation of membership within 28 days of the date of submission. Should you wish to obtain a refund, or cancel your membership before the period of 14 days has expired, or you feel that you have cause to make this request outside of this time, please contact our membership secretary on membership@mpg.org.uk who will do their best to resolve the matter.

13.   MISCELLANEOUS

13.1   These terms and conditions together with any applicable schedules hereto and the privacy policy shall form the entire agreement between the parties.

13.2   If any provision of these terms and conditions is found to be void or unenforceable such finding shall have no effect on the remainder of the terms and conditions, which shall remain in full force and effect.

13.3   No failure of MPG to enforce any of these terms and conditions in any particular instance(s) shall constitute an ongoing waiver of such terms and conditions.

13.4   MPG reserves the right to amend these Terms and conditions at any time. In such event MPG will post a notice on the Site indicating that a change has occurred and your continuing use of the Site shall be deemed your agreement to such change(s).

14.   LAW AND JURISDICTION

These terms and conditions shall be governed by the laws of England and Wales and the courts of England and Wales shall be the courts of jurisdiction.

This privacy policy forms part of the Terms and Conditions of the Music Producers Guild (UK) Limited ("MPG"), which you should also read. It concerns member information (or data) that may be stored by MPG, and is intended to give you confidence about the privacy and security of your personal information.

The MPG is registered with the Information Commissioners Office under the terms of the Data Protection act [Registration number Z9774475], and protects online data accordingly. The Music Producers Guild (UK) does not hold or intend to hold debit or credit card information.

1. Information we collect

On registering for the MPG website, you will provide details such as your name, email address and street address.

In the case of an award for a production team, i.e. producer, recording engineer and mix engineer, 2 out of 3 must be UK residents. If the same engineer recorded and mixed the project, then either the producer or the engineer must be UK residents. In the case that one person was producer, engineer and mixer, then he/she must be a UK resident.

3. The project must have been available for commercial release in the UK during the qualifying period, which is: October 1st 2007 - September 30th 2008.

The MPG Awards categories are as follows:

PRODUCER OF THE YEAR
(for "qualifying" productions)

This person has overall creative and technical control of the entire recording project and the individual recording sessions that are a part of that project. He or she is present in the recording studio, or at the location recording, and works directly with the artist and engineer. The producer makes creative and aesthetic decisions that realize both the artist's and record company's goals in the creation of musical content. Other duties include, but are not limited to: keeping budgets and schedules, adhering to deadlines, hiring musicians, singers, studios and engineers. Producers must have produced the work of other artists. Artist who self-produce will only be eligible if they also produce other artists work.

The following credits are eligible: Producer, Co-Producer, Vocal Production

The following credits are not eligible for Producer awards: Executive Producer, Assistant Producer / Associate Producer, Additional Production Strings (or any other instrument).

RECORDING ENGINEER OF THE YEAR
(for "qualifying" productions)

The engineer must have both recorded and mixed all of the releases under consideration. The engineer is present in the recording studio, or at the location recording, and is responsible for the process of recording and mixing a project, as well as technical issues and decisions. He or she operates (or oversees the operation of) the equipment during the recording process, and makes creative and aesthetic choices in order to realize the sound and concepts the artist and producer envisage. A mastering engineer is not eligible except in the category of Best Mastering Engineer.

The following credits are eligible: Recording Engineer, Recorded By

The following credits are not eligible for Engineer awards: Digital Audio Workstation Engineer/Operator, Assistant Engineer, tape operator, mix engineer or programming.

BEST MIX ENGINEER
(for "qualifying" productions)

The mix engineer must have mixed, but not recorded all of the releases under consideration. This person is responsible for taking previously recorded material and creating a mixdown of the original separate tracks to create a finished product (either stereo or multi-channel) that can then be mastered and distributed.

The following credits are eligible: Mixed By / Mixer / Mix Engineer

BEST MASTERING ENGINEER
(for mastering work on "qualifying" productions)

The mastering engineer must have been responsible for the processing and preparation of production masters for commercial release.

BEST LIVE ALBUM/DVD
(for "qualifying" productions)

The project must have been recorded in front of a live audience at a concert venue. Judged on the quality of production, recording and mixing, awards are presented individually to the producer, engineer and mixer.

UK ALBUM OF THE YEAR
(for a "qualifying" production)

Judged on the quality of production, recording and mixing, awards are presented individually to the producer, engineer and mixer.

UK SINGLE OF THE YEAR
(for a "qualifying" production)

Judged on the quality of production, recording and mixing, awards are presented individually to the producer, engineer and mixer.

BEST RE-MIXER
(for "qualifying" productions)

The re-mixer will have taken already-recorded material and created a completely new version of the track using what are generally understood to be "re-mixing" studio techniques.

THE JOE MEEK AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN PRODUCTION
(for work on "qualifying" production(s))

This award recognises work which is genuinely original and ground-breaking in its creative use of technology in record production. Nominations will be accepted for this award with the final decision being made by the Music Producers Guild Awards Committee.

BREAKTHROUGH PRODUCER

Presented to a UK producer who has achieved significantly increased recognition during the current year.

BREAKTHROUGH ENGINEER

Presented to a UK producer, engineer, mixer or re-mixer who has achieved significantly increased recognition during the current year.

BEST STUDIO

Awarded to the best commercial studio, i.e. a studio which exists solely by means of income derived from the rental of its facilities for the recording and/or mixing of music.

BEST INTERNATIONAL PRODUCER

Awarded to a non-UK producer (under the same criteria as Producer Of The Year).

THE UNSUNG HERO AWARD

Awarded to an individual who is judged to be deserving of praise for their efforts, and where they would otherwise not have received such recognition. This award will be decided by the readers of Pro Sound News and Music Week.

The AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO UK MUSIC

Awarded to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the UK music recording industry (judged by the Music Producers Guild Awards Committee).

Plans for the first ever MPG Awards ceremony are now well underway, and the design of the selection process is now concluded.

The "Voting Membership" status enables eligible members to vote in the short-listing process of the MPG Awards.

Plans for the first ever MPG Awards ceremony are now well underway, and the design of the selection process is now concluded.

The "Voting Membership" status enables eligible members to vote in the short-listing process of the MPG Awards.

To qualify for an upgrade to Voting Member status, an existing full member must be a UK resident, and have either:

6 credits for production, engineering, mixing, or mastering on commercially released tracks, either on single or multiple CDs, vinyl or cassette albums, EPs and singles, or DVDs. These tracks must have been commercially available via traditional outlets, i.e. record shops or mail order. Personal sales, i.e. directly by the artist at live venues, do not qualify.

or:

12 credits for production, engineering or mixing on commercially released tracks or two full-length CD releases that are available via digital download from recognised online music retail sites. Sales from personal websites do not qualify. Tracks solely available free from other websites, e.g. a MySpace page, do not qualify

We recognise that some members who live outside of the UK may feel unfairly excluded by this condition. If so, please get in touch and your circumstances will be considered.

MPG Awards selection process 2009

There are five phases in the selection process:

1. Nomination: candidates are nominated in a completely open process, i.e. anyone can nominate anyone for a particular award.

2. Verification: The Awards Committee will verify each nomination for eligibility, and if necessary, move nominations to more appropriate award categories. The Awards Committee will also make further nominations if any eligible individuals have been inappropriately passed over. All nominations will be submitted through a website and all nominators will be sent an email to verify their email address.

3. Short list selection: Using a secure website, MPG voting members will be allowed to vote for the shortlist. The votes will be calculated so that the top 3 in each award category will go through to the shortlist and final judging process.

4. Short list verification: The short list will be verified by the Awards Committee in case of multiple third places. Either a short list of 4 will be allowed through, or the Awards Committee will have the power to remove a person/project/company from the short list. All short-listed candidates will then be contacted to provide more details on the person, project or company - these will be contact details, credits and a 100 word testimonial.

5. Judging of finalists: The short lists will then be presented to the judging panels (see below for details of the panels), comprised of appropriate individuals, selected and approved by the Awards Committee.

Exceptions To The Normal Procedure

The Unsung Hero Award will be voted for by readers of Music Week and Pro Sound News after the shortlist process has taken place.

The Joe Meek Award for Innovation will be awarded by the MPG Awards Committee

2. The Specialist Panel - (details to be finalised, but initially....) comprised of 3 producers, 3 engineers, 2 artists, 2 A&R people, 1 Mastering Engineer, 1 APRS representative. They will be voting for Best Mastering Engineer, Best Studio, Recording Engineer of the Year, Best Mixer and ??? The Unsung Hero.???

A chairman of the judging panel(s) will be appointed.

The new Membership System - October, 2009

For several months, the board of the directors of the Music Producers Guild has been debating the role of the MPG and its future for the membership. In the past year we have seen major developemnts, including the launch of the MPG Awards and the new web site, which now functions as a hub for all things MPG. We have also seen major changes in the operation of the UK music industry, and these changes have affected producers and engineers in remarkable ways. It would be negligent if the MPG were to ignore the effects of these changes.

The discussions, which are representative of the lively and heated debates which take place at most MPG board meetings, have also centred on the organisation of the membership subscription system. The board agrees that we need to re-structure the membership system so that it more accurately reflects the nature of the membership, the majority of whom are working professionals. However, the MPG must also represent those who are still developing their careers.

As you may know, the income of the MPG comprises solely of member subscriptions. It was decided long ago that the MPG would not invite advertising, and that the integrity of the MPG would not be compromised by financially rewarding associations with commercial businesses of any kind. All the directors on the board of the MPG are volunteers, and give their time freely without the expectation of any reward.

As a result, finances are tight, and the board is mindful of the need to use resources efficiently. The subscription fees, which have not been subject to an increase for many years, will also be re-structured.

The new system comprises two membership categories:

1. Full Membership: this is most appropriate to those whose principal professional activity is an involvement in the production of recorded music for commercial release. Full Members are required to demonstrate their professional status by providing commercial credits (details to follow) and the higher subscription fee provides them with access to several substantial privileges:

• access to Full Member-only sections of the MPG web site, including "Professional Benefits" (legal advice, accountancy, equipment rental)

• entry in the Members Directory, which is accessed regularly by artists, managers and record companies looking for producers and engineers to work on recording projects

• free entry to all MPG events (except the MPG Awards)

• substantial discounts on tickets to the MPG Awards

• free invitation to events organised by the APRS and AES (UK)

• 50% discount on Individual Membership of the APRS (details to follow)

• voting privileges in the MPG Awards shortlist selection process

2. Associate Membership: this level of membership is provided for those whose activities are no less professional, but might not be their principal activity. It provides a more limited selection of privileges for a more affordable subscription fee.

Associate Members are also be able to purchase two add-on options; entry in the Members Directory and/or an MPG Events "season ticket", which provides free entry to MPG events (which will otherwise be chargeable per event). There is a modest charge per year for these add-on options.

The Music Producers Guild Annual Awards:

In order to maintain the legitimacy and integrity of the MPG Awards, the shortlists of which are selected by MPG Full Members, it is hoped that as many current members as are eligible will become Full Members, and ensure that award winners continue to be rewarded by their professional peers.

How will the new membership system work?

On Monday, October 19th, 2009, the change to the new system was activated. In order to make the transition as smooth as possible, all current members became temporary Associate Members on this date.

An immediate upgrade path to Full Membership is available, and all those who qualify (see details below) are invited to upgrade. The directors of the MPG would urge all eligible members to upgrade as soon as possible, and a very generous upgrade path has been provided for a limited time.

All eligible members who have renewed their membership (or joined the MPG) during the past 6 months are able to upgrade to Full Membership free of charge. Members who renewed (or joined) prior to the past 6 months are charged a nominal £25.

If you believe that you are eligible for Full Membership, please upgrade immediately by clicking here, listing details of your professional credits.

If you do not yet qualify for Full Membership, you are eligible for a refund credit depending on the number of days since your last renewal or joining date (this does not apply to current Student Members). In order to receive this credit, you must respond by clicking here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: if you do not reply before your renewal date, you will not receive the free discount credits. Any member wishing to upgrade to Full Membership will then be charged the full subscription fee.

Furthermore, these discounts will be available only until November 30th, 2009. Thereafter, the full membership subscription charges will apply.

It sounds complicated, but we believe that it represents a fair method of encouraging eligible members to upgrade, without penalising those who do not yet qualify.

The legitimacy and integrity of the Music Producers Guild Awards depends upon the greatest possible number of voting members in the MPG, since the winners must be seen to rewarded by their professional peers.

We hope you will understand and appreciate these improvements, and accept the increase in subscription fees, at least for Full Members. There has not been an increase for several years, and it will enable the board to provide an even more valuable service in the future.

What is a Record Producer?

It is extemely difficult to describe, to those not directly involved in the production of recorded music, just how much of a valuable contribution the record producer makes to the final outcome of a recording project.

Even many of those professionaly employed in recording and publishing companies and management, allowing for their appreciation of its value, would be hard pressed to come up with a short, concise description of such a varied and multi-skilled activity.

As a result, a collection of descriptions of the record producer's role has been gathered from the membership of the Music Producers Guild (UK), and is presented below.

A record producer's job is to realise the full potential of an artist or band, by supervising their work in the recording studio, often to an extent that the artists themselves had not previously imagined, and which they sometimes will be unable to appreciate until the producer's work is done.

During the course of this work, both in preparation before the actual recording, and during the recording process, the producer must be supportive, challenging inspiring, demanding, and do whatever it takes to bring out the best in the artist, and capture the highest level of performance at that particular time.

A lot of artists are understandably nervous when recording new works, and lack the confidence which possible subsequent success later brings. The producer must display his confidence in their material and transmit that confidence to the artist so that they can deliver performances worthy of the songs.

Confidence, leadership, diplomacy, and of course, creative musical talent, are all qualities which a producer must possess. A thorough knowledge and familiarity with all of the technology used in contemporary and classic recording is essential.

Some producers develop from roots in musical composition and live performance while others arrive via the studio route, having spent time as recording engineers, and studying, by association, the work of the talented producers with whom they have collaborated.

No matter which path the producer follows, he or she must develop facility in a number of areas, which include musical analysis, song arrangement, technical fluency, familiarity with the latest studio techniques, and the skill to combine these factors in a skilful and creative fashion.

When it comes to studio techniques and style, no two producers work in the same way. Some are very "hands on", in that they involve themselves in every minute detail of the musical arrangement of the artists' songs, in effect becoming an extra member of the band. Whereas others take more of a back seat, subtlely guiding the artist through the maze of multitudinous options available when making contemporary records. Some producers move between the two roles, depending on the needs of the artist and the music.

I tend to view the record producer's role as being similar to that of a film director. A record producer is generally responsible for co-ordinating and steering a project creatively, technically and financially to a sometimes vague, pre-planned conclusion; the desired conclusion has usually been decided through meetings, rehearsals, discussions and sometimes demo recordings.

A record producer has to be a good politician and diplomat, a good listener and an excellent therapist. Wherever possible a Record Producer needs to have no ego and the patience of a saint. Beyond that, a good knowledge of music generally, including music practice and theory. Also a good knowledge of studio technology both past and present is vital. Some general business skills are also very useful.

A record producer for me, is a tireless, often talented person who also acts as a major creative influence when contributing towards the process of record making and recording. The influence of a record producer should be paramount in realising the best possible recordings and mixes that reflect the songs presented and suit both the band and their ability and the music fans alike.

It is very important for bands and musicans to develop a longer term relationship with a producer to ease the process of making future recordings together. We are, at times the thankless backroom team of diplomats of the recording world helping and easing the process of great recordings with a wide variety of artists.

We all greatly enjoy the detail of our work and the contributions we seek to make. The best producers. IMHO, are also very capable and proven recording engineers.

Having interviewed a large number of producers for Resolution Magazine, I have noticed that there is a common philosophy amongst most producers (from diverse genres) which can be summed up as something along these lines: A good producer flies by the seat of his pants, and does and says whatever is necessary to achieve the best result in any given situation!

When describing to a layman what a record producer does, I most often say that we are like a director in the movie business. We make the recording as the director in film makes the film. Of course this is simplistic, but it gets the idea across. We try to use our creative past/experience whatever it is, wherever we have come from in music, to guide/empower the artist to their best recorded performance and stay within a budget.

We attempt to stay within the budget by having input on the appropriate studio to use, at what point to go from professional project studio/pre production to the big studio, if at all these days, then through mastering. We help pick the songs to be recorded by giving an objective opinion to the artist, many times saying what the artist may not want to hear. We cast the musicians/players when needed. One thing that is unlike the movie business director is that we also many times do what the producer in the movie business does as well, which is aquiring the money/budget to make the recording in the first place.

There are many different types of producer:
1) The producer who is also a brilliant musician (i.e. Quincy Jones or Phil Ramone).

2) The producer that came through the engineering ranks and is a brilliant engineer, and Pro-Tools wizard, yet is not a musician.

3) There are those that wouldn't know one knob from the next yet just have the golden ears to know what will work.

No matter which one anyone is, a common thread seems to be that of acting psychiatrist, and knowing when and how hard to push an artist, or pull back. This is something that takes a long time to get really good at (i.e. Imagine George Martin shepherding the Beatles in 1967 or 1968, or Quincy with Michael Jackson in 1981-1983 to really understand this).

I think even the most experienced producer learns something new on every new project, and puts that in his toolbox for the next one. One thing is for sure. It takes a village to make a great record.

A record producer is the person who combines all his previous expertise (it could be engineering, musicianship, managerial skills, people skills, financial skills, public relations skills or writers skills or any combinations of these) to actualize the making of a record.

a "psycologist" first of all, a good musician, a fantastic engineer, an excellent composer/songwriter, sometimes an accountant.

Music production draws on managerial and administrative skills, creative and compositional skills, psychological and social skills and technological skills. There is also a core skill base that producers often draw on, that can be a compositional and creative and/or a technichal skill base.

From my findings it is clear that music production is an extremely diverse and multi-skilled discipline and there is no one way to approach it. As much as the role is an evolving one, it draws on age-old communication and listening skills. An emerging music producer must learn from this as well as from experience.

I also found that above all, passion for music is one of the main ingredients to being a successful music producer. The production process can present many financial and emotional obstacles and it is through these difficulties that the producer's inherent love for music will assert itself as the most vital motivational force.

I class myself as a music producer rather than record producer purely because the music I produce doesn't necessarily end up on a record and globally these days it ends up in a digital format of some sort. This is me personally and doesn't reflect the way in which other producers term themselves.

A good example of a producers role is when I produce with a band, they write all the music and come to me as a producer as an external critic who is able to understand the direction of the project, I will guide and evolve the overall sound, arrangement and performance of the songs in order for them to reach market potential. To flip this on its head, as a producer of dance music I'm at the controls and will often compose the music as well as be the main producer.

I guess the real job of a producer is to be able to work on many levels really, producing is not just specific to the music itself, I often find myself producing the vocals also, especially with vocal performances that have multiple layers i.e harmonies.

The business model of producing a record/product hasn't really changed that much although the technology we use has, which I suppose in turn has helped to speed up the productivity of the overall process.

I believe a record producer is the interim member of the band, or indeed the long lost friend for a solo artist. Someone with the understanding, the knowledge and the appreciation for the music of the specific project, but also with the vision, determination and craft necessary to keep everybody focused on the target, the skill to find the shortest path ahead, the endurance to ride the long wave, the cheek to always ask for the impossible and the luck to get it sometimes, the patience to get through hard times and the impatience to get some quick results. My understanding of the role of the producer was that he or she was responsible for the artistic performances, for the musicians and the overall feel and sound of the recording.

But my view has changed since I started producing and I now understand that the producer can also co-write the song or use his or hers tools to arrange and develop a sound for the specific song.

Due to the fact that the various roles in the creation of a recording can overlap, the producer has to have an agreement with the other parties that he or she is the producer.

Examples of what a producer would be:

a) Record label or the artist comes to me with just lyrics and melody under the lyrics and ask me to co-write and produce the song. They have obviously heard my previous works and they know what sound they will get. I am the co-writer and the producer.

b) Record label or the artist comes to me with lyrics, melody and basic music, in other words all the songwriting is done, and they ask me to produce the song and put my expertise to make it into a marketable product. I am just the producer.

In essence if you know the various job roles involved in the creation of a recording you will not find it hard to understand the producer's role. A basic illustration of the chain of people goes like this:

Songwriter -> Producer -> Recording Engineer -> Mixer -> Mastering engineer -> Radio, iTunes, HMV

I didn't put the musicians in because they can be session musicians that are getting paid a fee to just play their instrument. They would come in around when the recording engineer comes in.

In the case that the musicians are members of a band or the artist then they are probably but not always get involved with the songwriting process. That would make them co-writers.

I believe that the confusion has come with the credits on a CD. It is more fashionable for someone to have the "Produced by" credit than the "Music by" credit even if he is the co-writer. This fashion has come from the States where everyone knows that Timbaland is a producer but they don't know that he is also a songwriter. Many record labels they would tag their new artists as producers even if they are working with a well known producer, just because it will be a selling point.

MPG Awards selection process 2010

There are five phases in the selection process:

1. Nomination: candidates are nominated in a completely open process, i.e. anyone can nominate anyone for a particular award.

2. Verification: The Awards Committee will verify each nomination for eligibility, and if necessary, move nominations to more appropriate award categories. The Awards Committee will also make further nominations if any eligible individuals have been inappropriately passed over. All nominations will be submitted through a website and all nominators will be sent an email to verify their email address.

3. Short list selection: Using a secure website, Full Members of the Music Producers Guild will be allowed to vote to create the shortlists. The votes will be calculated so that the top 3 in each award category will go through to the shortlist, and the final judging process.

4. Short list verification: The short list will be verified by the Awards Committee in case of multiple third places. Either a short list of 4 will be allowed through, or the Awards Committee will have the power to remove a person/project/company from the short list. All short-listed candidates will then be contacted to provide more details on the person, project or company - these will be contact details, credits and a 100 word testimonial.

5. Judging of finalists: The short lists will then be presented to the judging panels (see below for details of the panels), comprised of respected professionals from the UK music industry, selected and approved by the Awards Committee.

There will be two Judging Panels:

1. The Main Panel - (details to be finalised, but initially....) comprised of 3 producers, 3 engineers, 2 artist managers, 2 A&R people, 2 artists and 2 radio presenters or journalists. They will be voting for Producer of the Year, Best Live Album/DVD, UK Album of the Year, UK Single of the Year, Best Re-Mixer, Best Newcomer and Best International Producer

2. The Specialist Panel - (details to be finalised, but initially....) comprised of 3 producers, 3 engineers, 2 artists, 2 A&R people, 1 Mastering Engineer. They will be voting for Best Mastering Engineer, Best Studio, Recording Engineer of the Year, Best Mixer and ??? The Unsung Hero.???

A chairman of the judging panel(s) will be appointed.

2. Members Directory: MPG members' profile data is available to MPG members and non-members alike (subject to each member's Privacy Settings). You can search by musical genre, role and/or instrument(s) played by selecting the appropriate tick boxes and clicking on the "Filter Directory" button. You can also search using the general search function, which you find at the top right corner of every page.

3. The Knowledge Bank: this is a depository of useful articles, similar to a reference library. They are arranged under subject, inside folders, or "categories". New articles or information can be added by submitting an email to the MPG admin team, as instructed near the top of the page.

4. The Dashboard: each member has their own section, known as the "Dashboard", where they can:

edit their profile.
set privacy options for the access to their personal details by other visitors to the site.
upload audio files for access by visitors to the site. The files need to be non-variable bit rate mp3 files. You can upload as many as you like as long as the total does not exceed 5Mb.
create blogs.
add a photo to their page.

5. Editing your Profile:

"Account Details": enter an email address, which visitors to the site will use to make contact with you. This is also the address that MPG will use to make contact with you, so please make sure it is cureent. Also enter a username (between 3 and 12 characters), which will be used when you log into the site. This username is case sensitive, and must not contain any spaces, but may contain any alphanumeric characters.
"About Me": this is the area where you not only add details about yourself, but also should consider inserting as many keywords as you can think of that will help to identify you to visitors searching for producers, engineers, etc.
(please note: to create paragaph breaks, use Shift-Return instead of a simple Return)
"My Skills": when visitors are searching for MPG members they can limit their searches by selecting genres, skills and/or musical instruments played. Use this section to enter details of your talents. Click on a category to add it to your page; hold the Apple key (Mac) or the CTRL key (PC) whilst adding additional categories.

If the current list of categories is inadequate, please feel free to send an email to the MPG with your suggestions.

6. Privacy Settings: here you can specify how many of your personal details are visible, and by whom (members, non-members or no-one at all). On this page, you can also set the option to receive the MPG email enewsletter (or not).

7. My Image/Photo: here you can upload a photo, to appear on your member page. The format should preferably be JPEG (.jpg) and the picture will be re-sized automatically but try to use an image with size below about 200 KB.

8. General advice for entering text in the web site:

It's better to type text directly form your computer keyboard, but if you're copy/pasting from another text source, make sure that the text contains no formatting codes, e.g. from Word docs or internet web pages. These codes will, at best, make your entries look messy and possibly unreadable, and at worst can cause the website to crash. If you're copying from Word, export the file as "raw text", then copy/paste. If you're using a web source, import the text into a word processor, e.g. Word or Mac's Text Edit, then export as "raw text". This should clear the formatting codes, but at any rate, please check before pasting into your profile, blog, or a comment page on any part of the site. If in doubt, use the "Contact" link to seek advice from a member of the MPG website team.

Membership of the Music Producers Guild (UK)

There are two categories of membership of the MPG.

Full Membership (£120 per year) - this is open to recording industry professionals (see the eligibility requirements below) and provides a substantial number of extra membership benefits:

• access to Full Member-only sections of the MPG web site, including "Professional Benefits" (legal advice, accountancy, equipment rental, 50% discount on the joining fee at AIM) - details here
• free entry to all MPG events (except the MPG Awards)
• substantial discounts on tickets to the MPG Awards
• free invitation to events organised by the APRS and AES (UK)
• 50% discount on Individual Membership of the APRS (details here)
• voting privileges in the MPG Awards shortlist selection process
• searchable entry in the Members Directory, which is accessed regularly by artists, managers and record companies looking for producers and engineers to work on recording projects

Associate Membership - (£55 per year) is open to anyone involved in the production of recorded music, but who has not yet achieved the required number is credits for Full Membership. Associate Membership provides everything except the above list.

Associate Members' entry to MPG events is charged at a reduced rate, nominally equivalent to 50% of the charge to non-members.

Associate Members can choose to purchase either or both of these add-on options:

• Entry in the Members Directory (for £25 per year).

• MPG Event "season ticket", which provides one year's free entry to all MPG events, except the MPG Awards (£25 per year).

Discounts for longer term membership:

Members can opt for extended membership periods of 2 or 3 years, and receive an appropriate subscription discount:

• Full Membership: 2 years £215, 3 years £305 (savings of £25 and £55, respectively)
• Associate Membership: 2 years £99, 3 years £140 (savings of £11 and £25, respectively)

Membership Revision:

An existing MPG member may revise the terms of their membership at any time. If eligible, they may upgrade from Associate Membership to Full Membership, and/or extend the period of membership. This is a very flexible process, e.g. you may even revise from a 3-year Associate Membership to a 1-year Full Membership.

Any credit that remains in your subscription account is deducted from the charges listed above.

APRS members:

Individual Members of the APRS are granted a 50% discount on Full Membership of the MPG (subject to the eligibility requirements below).

Note that, if you are a current MPG member, and have already taken advantage of the 50% discount on APRS Individual Membership, you will not be eligible for the 50% MPG discount (and vice versa). Moreover, if you are a current MPG Full Member, and you subsequently join the APRS as an Individual Member, you will be eligible only for the 50% discount on your new APRS membership, not your MPG membership.

Full Membership eligibility

To qualify for Full Membership of the MPG, you must have:

6 credits for production, engineering, mixing or mastering on commercially released tracks, either on single or multiple CDs, vinyl or cassette albums, EPs and singles, or DVDs. These tracks must have been commercially available via traditional outlets, i.e. record shops or mail order. Personal sales, i.e. directly by the artist at live venues, do not qualify.

or:

12 credits for production, engineering, mixing or mastering on commercially released tracks or two full-length CD releases that are available via digital download from recognised online music retail sites. Sales from personal websites do not qualify. Tracks solely available free from other websites, e.g. a MySpace page, do not qualify.

The MPG Awards categories are as follows (for a definition of "qualifying" see the note below):

Producer of the Year (for a "qualifying" period)

Recording Engineer of the Year (for a "qualifying" period - the engineer must have both recorded and mixed all of the releases under consideration)

Best Mix Engineer (for "qualifying" productions - the mixer must have mixed and not recorded all of the releases under consideration)

Best Mastering Engineer (for mastering work on "qualifying" productions)

Best Live Album/DVD (for a "qualifying" production - the project must have been recorded in front of a live audience at a concert venue)

UK Album of the Year (for a "qualifying" production)

UK Single of the Year (for a "qualifying" production)

Best Re-Mixer (for "qualifying" productions, for which the remixer took already-recorded material and created a completely new version of the track using what are generally understood to be "remixing" studio techniques)

The Joe Meek Award for Innovation in Production (for work which is recognised as genuinely original and ground-breaking creative use of technology in record production)

Best Newcomer (for a producer, engineer, mixer or remixer who has achieved recognition during the current year, and whose work was previously unrecognised)

Best Studio (awarded to the best commercial studio, i.e. a studio which exists solely by means of income derived from the rental of its facilities for the recording and/or mixing of music)

Best International Producer (awarded to a non-UK producer)

The Unsung Hero Award (awarded to an individual, resident in the UK, who is judged to be deserving of praise for their efforts, and where they would otherwise not have received such recognition)

Definition of "qualifying":

1. at least 51% of the studio time was spent in the UK

2. apart from the Best International Producer and the Joe Meek Award, award recipients must be UK residents. In the case of an award for a production team, i.e. producer, recording engineer and mixer, 2 out of 3 must be UK residents. If the same engineer recorded and mixed the project, then either the producer or the engineer must be UK residents. In the case that one person was producer, engineer and mixer, then he/she must be a UK resident.

Go to your dashboard page (hit the link in the top right hand corner of any MPG page), where you will find a link in the column on the right hand side of the page: "my image/photo". This will take to another page, where you browse your computer's hard drive for a suitable image. Then hit "upload".

How can I upload my music?

Go to your dashboard page (hit the link in the top right hand corner of any MPG page), where you will find a link in the column on the right hand side of the page: "upload audio files". This will take to another page, where you browse your computer's hard drive for audio files to upload. Then hit the link: "Upload a new audio file?".

How can I change my privacy settings?

Go to your dashboard page (hit the link in the top right hand corner of any MPG page), where you will find a link in the column on the right hand side of the page: "privacy settings".

How can I contact the MPG?

How can I post a blog in the Vocal Booth?

First, you write the blog in your personal blog page. You can access this by using the link "update my blog" on the right hand side of any MPG page, and then clicking "compose a new post". Beneath the main text area of the new blog, there is a checkbox: "Add post to the Vocal Booth". Checking this box will create an alias of your blog on the Vocal Booth page. Any changes or edits you make to the original blog page will be reflected in the Vocal Booth and vice versa.

How can I find a member's blog page?

Go to their profile page, which you find by using the web site search function (top right of every page), unless they have chosen to maintain complete privacy.

The Music Producers Guild is run entirely by the efforts of the directors, who are un-paid volunteers. Does the MPG provide legal support?

Not directly, although Full Members of the MPG are entitled to take advantage of the generous offer of 30 minutes free consultation with music business lawyer, Penny Gantz. Please refer to the member benefits pages. Full Members may also access a selection of pre-formatted legal agreement documents, which are designed to help producers set up appropriate legal relationships with their clients.

Mick Glossop is mixing a new album for Paul Carrack at AIR Lyndhurst studio 2. He is also producing the new album for for Sparkydog, in their project studio in Hollywood, Florida. Their current single, "Red Light", is currently enjoying massive radio play in the AC format on U.S. commercial radio, and also on college radio stations across the U.S.

He has just finished mixing the new album "Broken Record" for Lloyd Cole in his own hybrid Pro Tools/vintage analogue studio in West London (www.mickglossop.com/studio).

Mick has also recently produced new tracks for Ariel.

Blue Weaver has been recording and mixing a new album for Spanish singer/songwriter Arturo Torrés in Málaga. He is now writing for an exciting new project to be recorded in Nashville at the end of the year.

Tony Platt - I am still trying to finish the album, started some time ago, with Jacqui Dankworth, with arrangements by her father John. his recent passing has naturally complicated things but we are determined to complete the work in his honour. I have been very fortunate to have known and worked with John, a great privilege. This weekend I will be in the MPG "Studio of the Year", Kore, recording a Norwegian rock band called Bergsfjord. The development of a fine singer/songwriter called Natalia Dusso is moving forward and last night we listened to some of the songs and started planning with the fine bunch of musicians we have assembled.

Mark Rose is currently developing and producing art rockers Nephu Huzzband..with their 2nd album due in in 2010/2011 with plans to work alongside Alex Newport (Death Cab for Cutie,Does it Offend You Yeah!, Johnny Foreigner, 65 days of Static,Stone Foxes) Mark is currently working with 2 other UK rock acts in pre-production during 2010.

Haydn Bendall - Mixing Jelone tracks in The Shop (the studio Tony Platt and I share), going through material with Nicola Hitchcock with a view to producing her forthcoming album. Clemence will be a possible signing to our label and also plans are distilling to make an album at Amberville studios with my hero Paul Buchanan... what a genius he is and more importantly, what a lovely guy!

Stevan Krakovic is currently finishing off Tom Mansi & The Icebreakers new album „Welcome Intruder“, which will come out later this year on Kartel Creative.
The album was entirely recorded, mixed and produced at the band‘s north London Shock & Awe Studios.

George Shilling - George has recorded, mixed and mastered the Haiti Classical Relief single "The Prayer" which is released on Mothering Sunday March 14th.

The artistes were recorded at Angel and Metropolis Studios, and the track was mixed and mastered by George at Bank Cottage Studio.

The full list of artists taking part are as follows (in alphabetical order): Aled Jones, All Angels, Blake, Bond, Camilla Kerslake, Charlie Siem, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Darius Campbell, Elysium, Faryl Smith, Gardar Thor Cortez, Julian Lloyd Webber, Julian Smith, Libera, Natasha Marsh, Only Men Aloud, Operababes, Paul Potts, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rhydian, Sara Kempe, The Priests, Wynne Evans.

George also played bass guitar on the track.

In other news, George recorded and mixed "Dawn Cried The Day" at Bank Cottage for Ocean Colour Scene's next single release, the band declaring it "the best recording we've ever done!" His cello playing also features on their recent album release "Saturday".

Marco Migliari is currently producing and mixing UK band Nylo's (www.nylo.co.uk) first record, recorded at Real World Studios and, after some final tweaks, soon to be mixed at his own Green Room Studio. (http://www.marcomigliari.com/uksite/Green%20Room%20Studio.html). With a single already on iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/it/album/i-keep-fallin-single/id328320387) the forthcoming album should be release early next year.

Another interesting project that Marco has recently engineered is the collaboration between historic King Crimson's drummer Michael Giles (http://www.myspace.com/gilesdrums) and jazz pianist Keith Tippett, himself a session player for King Crimson in the old days. The aptly named Mad Band project (which sees also the contribution of Ad Chivers on percussion and Dan Pennie on the guitar) is an experimental session which will culminate in its second album, which Marco will mix at his studio in the new year.

Marco couldn't completely betray his Italian origins as he's also producing the 4th album for Rome-based band Fonderia (http://www.myspace.com/fonderia) - an (almost) instrumental 5-piece group with an incredibly organic sound, a medley of Pink Floyd, Sigur Ròs and avant-garde jazz with strong flavours and unexpected textures.

Finally, Marco has recently completed the album mix for upcoming Dutch artist Aestrid (http://www.myspace.com/aestrid), a rare talent who has dedicated the last 3 years working on his second record. Aestrid music is deep, wide and yet in your face, having both a fragile side and an effortlessly driven prog edge.

Malcolm Ford has recently completed a selection of Jazz standards with Mitch Winehouse (Amy's Father) which has been picked up by management to push for labels to re-record with a full orchestra. You can certainly hear where Amy get's it from!

Nicky Graham is currently Producing and Album with a ElectroPop act called Punch and Judys, who are managed by legendary manager Tom Watkins ( BROS E17 Pet Shop Boys )

He will be recording an album with Lee Mead early next year.

Nicky is also Producing a Musical based on the life of Marc Bolan which is planned to open in the West End in September 2010.
