Pharrell Williams. Producer of the decade.

Posted on: January 26, 2010 @ 11:04 AM
This was announced at Midem and there was an unbelievably sycophantic, cloying interview with the guy.God help us if this guy is being favourably compared to Quincy Jones!
ps Hope this post isn't too contentious.

No - not too contentious. I was at Glastonbury last year, when the stage manager pulled the plug when he over-ran his set - his reaction was exremely arrogant - talk about prima donnas!

Actually  ...... if you manage to sit through the bulk of it he doesn't really differ in his views to us! His attitude to technology is realistic and he too feels that the arrogance of labels believing they could control things was a mistake. He sounds to me that he is very artist centric and enjoys music a great deal - I didn't get an impressions of arrogance from him at all. The interviewer was useless though and I do agree that people should be much more careful when mentioning other producers as equals to Quincy Jones. The notion of somoeone or something being the best of the decade is pretty stupid too.

Well, Hayden, Mick, Tony...I would say in my humble respectful opinion that all of you have forgotton more than Pharrel Williams knows. When he won the producer Grammy in 2004 I was truly shocked. I don't consider beat programming to be record production (although now its certainly one part of it), and I would say I am in the age group between you all and Mr Williams. He had commercial success yes, but I couldn't name one of his songs. Without going into the details of Quincy's staggering career which you all know, any comparison to Quincy Jones is patently absurd.I would much rather take my queue and advice from all of you and your generation (as I often do),and George Martin, Robin Millar, and Quincy himself if I was lucky enough...as I write and produce pop music into 2010.
