My first introduction to recording was as a keyboard player (actually it was a Vox Continental) in a studio owned by our band manager above a cellophane wrapping factory in Amity Road, Stratford, East London. A tiny, sweaty attic with an Ampex four track tape recorder. I loved it from the first moment I entered the place. Cliff Cooper then went on to build Orange in New Compton Street and installed a fantastic four track studio, in the basement this time, of his amplifier and guitar shop. Whilst waiting to go to York University I was asked if I'd like a "summer job" as a tape op at the studio. I said yes and its been a very long summer....... about 35 years. I moved away from Orange after about a year and a circuitous route culminated in me getting my dream job as an assistant engineer at Abbey Road. I was there for 17 years and that place I did truly love and still do. I still feel so very lucky to be associated with that great studio, having been the chief engineer there for the last ten years of employment. I left Abbey Road in 1991/92 to pursue an independent producer/engineer career and am still so very happy to have this job! My passion always has been and still is, working with great musicians in great studios and I am a huge supporter of both.

Does anybody else feel that the vultures in the music business circling around an artist's publishing share is really distasteful? One of the albums I've finished recently even involves the A+R guy...
