So After 10 Years of great service, I'm thinking of purchasing a second Neve 88R for Sphere. Fairly simple concept right? Wrong! Because apparently a 10 year old design with components that can only have gone down in price, the desk, a 72 ( ok it's big but it's for a big room) will set me back a ...

Avid recently announced the release of version 10 of Pro Tools software.
It's a major upgrade, offering many new features (details here). <br/><br/>However,
there is some debate about the cost. To upgrade PT HD from 9 to 10
costs £754 (inc VAT), and from 8 to 10 costs £1138 (inc...

To anyone outside the music business, this seems obvious ("of course they should be paid...."), but to many people on the verges of, "the industry", recorded music should be available free to anyone. <br/><br/>Don't you agree that people should be paid for their wo...

I read this today - from a blog by music industry pundit, Bob Lefsetz:
<br/>
<br/>"Peter cuts tracks to tape. But what about the hard time getting tape? He just uses the same reels over and over again. Since he transfers the tracks off so soon, there's no print-through. Alt...

Many record companies, especially the majors, now demand that mixers and producers supply stems (i.e. sub-mixes of the various components of a mix) along with the actual master mix files.<br/><br/>They don't necessarily provide the resources (i.e. studio time, extra fees) to achieve t...

I am an up coming producer and a have a very fair contract with clients. However, more recently clients are not happy signing a contract, as they feel that major labels will not touch them. How am I supposed to protect myself? And to honest my contract certainly protects the client and their mate...

Several producers and mix engineers have been approached by record companies in recent years with requests for mixing "on spec".

Dear Members,
I am a relatively new member to the MPG and not quite sure how things are done - but...
I have two questions;
1/ The legalities, and record company use, of Stems. (memories of the SSL situation in the 1980's)
2/ Mixing on 'Spec'. I have been offered three since Christmas. I gues...

"No Better Than This", produced by the legendary T-Bone Burnett, was recorded in a selection of different acoustic environments, using a single RCA 77DX ribbon microphone (although in the videos, it's a RCA 44), onto a portable Ampex 601 mono tape machine. The performances have a great ...

I see absolutely no reason to upgrade from PT 8 HD to PT 9 HD. It would provide me with:
More aux tracks 256 > 512 - unnecessary
More busses 128 > 256 - unnecessary
AAF/OMF/MXF file interchange - unnecessary
Core Audio support (32 channels) - unnecessary for me
MP3 export - I p...

The BBC is broadcasting The Electric Proms in what they call "HD Sound", but it's only 320 kbs, AAC format - hardly high definition.
Of course, it's better than 128 kbs, but it's misleading the public.
